General Requirements

All of our modules require the following list of software and services. To participate in Math Teacher Link's Course Module Program you need:

  1. to be familiar with the basic operation of their computer's operating system. As a bare minimum, you should be able to open and close folders, copy files, delete files, start applications, open documents within an application, edit documents, and save documents
  2. regular access to a Macintosh or PC computer (running Windows 95 or higher) that is connected to the Internet
  3. each participant must have an e-mail account
  4. either Netscape (4.7x or higher) or Internet Explorer (5.0 or higher).  For information on selecting and installing a browser, read the materials below.  These browsers are all available free to teachers and students!
  5. decompression software -- WinZip (version 7.0 or higher) for PC or Stuffit Expander (version 5.0 or higher) for Macintosh. Go here, if you need additional information.
  6. Microsoft Word (6.0 or higher).

Also, some of the modules require that additional software be installed on your computer. See individual modules for details.

Should you need to install a web browser on your computer, follow the directions below.

  1. To install Netscape, go to the download site and select the appropriate product for your needs. We recommend Netscape Communicator Version(4.7x) that includes the web browser, email software, and all the multimedia tools you may need to enhance your internet experience.  It is in common use, well supported on the Internet, and what we have used to make the screen shots for the module on Using the Internet,  click here to download Version 4.7.   The newer version 6.x, has a much different look than version 4.7, click here to download Version 6.x.   If you would like additional information about which product to select, click here to read about the different options offered by Netscape.
  2. Netscape is available for Windows, Macintosh, and Unix platforms. At the download site, click on the link of your selected product ensuring for your particular platform.
  3. Now select your download location (Step 1) and click on the Download button (Step 2).
  4. You will then see a dialog box asking you to specify a location to download the file. Choose a location on your hard drive that you will remember such as the Desktop. Click ok and the self-extracting file will begin downloading. Follow the online instructions to install Netscape on your computer.

  1. To install Internet Explorer, go to the Microsoft download site. Microsoft will automatically take you to the download page appropriate for your particular platform.
  2. Click on the most current version of Internet Explorer (6.0 at this time), select your language and click next to continue.
  3. To begin the download, select the download site, click next and when the dialog box appears, choose "Open" or "Run this program from its current location".
  4. Internet Explorer will automatically install on your machine. You will be able to select a different directory (folder) from the default during the installation process if you wish.
