Teaching Statistics in High School |
In addition to the
general requirements for
participating in Math Teacher Link, this module also has the following
requirements:
- Microsoft Excel 5.0 or Higher
Microsoft provides academic discounts on their software. You can
check the academic pricing by clicking on
this
link. The price for Excel is around $129 for the PC or the
Mac. To find out where you can then purchase the product in your
area, click on
this link and follow the on screen directions. You might also
want to check with the Technology Coordinator in your school
district for possible special pricing. For example,
in Illinois, with some additional red tape teachers can buy
products through a special pricing that ISBE has negotiated with
Microsoft. Office 2000 Pro, which then includes Excel, Word,
Access, Outlook, and PowerPoint can be purchased for approximately
$75 ($50 for the license and $25 for the CD used to install it ).

Pricing site for details. Prior to ordering we recommend
making a phone call to the location indicated in their website, to
make sure you are ordering the correct license and CD for Office
Pro 2000.
- Statistics Course Text and Calculator Supplement
Each
participant in the Statistics Module will need to send away for the
textbook Statistics: The Craft of Data Collection, Description,
and Inference (Monrad, Stout, and Harner, Moebius Publications,
2002, 3rd edition), and its calculator supplement. To get these books,
you should directly contact the publisher, Mobius Communications. The
publisher's phone number is 800-662-4875, and their website address
is http://www.8-mobius.com/
- TI-83 or TI-89 Calculator
These calculators can be purchased at almost every electronics
store. Teachers in the United States and Canada can also receive
volume discounts by calling 1-800-TI-CARES.
- TI-Graph Link
If you follow this link to the Texas Instruments
page, you will find at the bottom of the page, the links to download the
software that is specific to the platform you are running. If
you are unfamiliar with TI-Graph Link, we suggest reading through
their guidebooks. If you do not have the connection cables already,
you will need to order them from TI or purchase them yourself.
Stores like Staples and WalMart often carry the TI-Graph Link cable
and software.
