Black Thread Method
This
assignment requires us to leave home plate (the classroom) and make a trip to the computer lab to
gather
information. Go to the web address,
www.atlantabraves.com/braves_b_h_h_CareerRecord/0,1966,10,00.html
This
should bring up the career stats on the great Hank Aaron.
Print
this page for use on this project, which we will do in class.
Using
the graphing calculator enter the years from ‘54 - ‘74 as L1. L2 will be the cumulative totals of
Hank
Aaron’s home runs from ‘54 - ‘74.
Plot
these points on the graphing calculator using Zoom 9 to set the window.
Using
what is referred to as the black thread method, choose two points
that appear to best fit the plotted
points. These will be the coordinates used to write
what is known as the best fit linear equation.
Using
these points we will calculate the slope of the line.
Use
the point - slope method to write the equation, which is known as
a linear regression.
Write
this equation in the form y = mx
+ b, the slope - intercept form. Your answers may vary.
Let’s
check with the calculator to see how the black thread method compares with the
calculator’s results.
Write
down the calculator’s results. ____________________________________
Graph
this equation along with stat plot 1.
Was
your black thread in the strike zone or was it out in left field??
